What type of counselling do you do?

I am a qualified Cognitive Behaviour therapist (CBT).   Since qualifying I have  continued to expand my skills, encompassing therapeutic modes such as Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and Ecotherapy.  These approaches have formed the majority of my continued training and research over the years.  My own practice of mindfulness meditation has also been influential.

What services do you offer?

Online:  I currently offer online therapy sessions via Zoom, a secure and easy-to-use video conferencing tool.

Face-to-face: I offer in-person therapy in the South West of France ( 19500).  I offer standard, face-to-face counselling sessions or wellbeing sessions such as walking therapy and mindfulness which take place outdoors in nature.

For all of my services I offer an initial free, 20-minute online consultation.

*Home visits within a radius of 30km of my base are possible but there is an additional cost for mileage.

Who do you work with?

The services I offer are available to anyone who is:

- An English speaker

- In the UK or in Europe

- Over the age of 18.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no set number and, on occasion,  one or two might be all that is needed.  More typically, people have between 6-10 sessions in order to reach their therapy goals. It will be determined by the scope of the identified issues, goals and also commitment to personal practice in between sessions.

You are never under any commitment to continue counselling. That said, it is always preferable to work towards a planned ending. We review the therapeutic process regularly to make sure that you are getting what you need.

What do I need for online counselling?

Basic requirements for online therapy are a private space where you will not be interrupted or overheard (this might be your home or even in your parked car), a good and stable internet connection (if you can stream Netflix or youtube this will be adequate), and a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone.

Is online counselling effective?

The use of video conferencing for accessing therapy has been growing steadily in popularity over the past decade.  And this year, with all the restrictions due to Covid 19, it has grown exponentially as almost all therapists have moved their work online.

There is much research to show that the treatment outcomes for online therapy are as good as face-to-face.

There are many advantages to working online such as being able to access therapy from the comfort of your own home and not having to travel. With fewer visual distractions, the use of the video link can even increase focus within the session.

There are limitations, for example, if someone is in crisis and therefore in need of face-to-face sessions, more support from a local network and services.

This is why I offer a free, 20-minute consultation before embarking so that we can guage your expectations of the counselling process and be sure that working online is a good fit for you and your needs.

How private is counselling?

The information you share with me during the sessions is private and confidential.

It is important to understand, though, that there are some exceptions to this:

  • if I had reason to believe that you were at risk of being hurt or of hurting someone else.

  • if I were concerned about the welfare of a child or vulnerable adult.

  • if you share any information regarding terrorism, drug trafficking or money laundering.  I am bound by law to disclose information of this nature.

Where possible I would include you in this process.  This might involve contacting your GP or other services on your behalf for advise and support.  Where, however, this were not the case I would have to disclose information directly to relevant agencies.

My client work forms the basis of my monthly sessions with my supervisor.  However, this work is discussed solely for purposes of ensuring the professional standard of my work and to ensure that I am offering you the best service. Your personal details are not shared and therefore the work remains anonymous.

I comply with the Data Protection Act, details of which can be found under the 'Privacy' link.

I am legally bound to keep all records for each client for at least 7 years after our work together has finished.  All paper notes are kept in a securely locked cabinet to ensure their confidentiality.  After 7 years these records are destroyed.

How secure is working online?

Zoom is a secure, video conferencing platform. Each client is given their own personal meeting room details and these will remain the same for each session. No one else has access to these unique codes.  Zoom has end-to-end encryption and other security measures in place to avoid any breaches. It is important to remember though that no technology is infallible and breaches can happen, albeit rarely.

For email, I use Protonmail, a service designed expressly with privacy in mind. It offers a much greater level of security than many other popular mailing systems.  Email communications will be used solely for practical information such as appointment times, scheduling changes, payment details etc.

Once I receive the initial consent form from you, I print it out, store this information securely in your file and then delete the attachment from my email.

If email privacy is a concern to you, you can also set up a protonmail account very simply and free of charge so that no one is able to see any communications between us.
